This popular Catholic prayer devotion came into general use in the 17th century and is prayed three times a day (early morning, noon and evening). It begins with and an opening prayer as a memorial of the incarnation of the Word being made flesh.

The bell is rung three times for each Ave Maria and nine times for the closing prayer. The name comes from its opening words in Latin, “Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ.” (The Angel of the Lord announced to Mary)

Mary of the Angelus Prayer Mission takes its inspiration from this event. Members seek to imitate Mary’s awareness that she has been called by God to be the mother of the Saviour. She is also aware of her lowliness and poverty.

The Lordhas looked upon his lowly servant.” (Luke 1:48); “for the almighty has done greatthings for me.”(Luke 1:49a.)

In her response to God’s message brought by the angel Gabriel at the Annunciation, she declared her willingness to join with her son in God’s plan to bring “His faithful love and mercy to every age. “ She proclaimed

“I am the handmaid of the Lord let what youhave said be done to me.” (Luke 1:38).

The Angelus members by their Daily Consecration identify with Mary the Mother of God as “the new Eve, and the mother of all the living, “to bring to birth Jesus in the hearts of those they pray for.

Members grow in God’s love through the prayer of Contemplation – Inner Healing and intercede for others to receive the gift of salvation. They learn how to proclaim God’s word to set captives free from the bondages of sin and pray for the healing of a wounded spirit. Under the anointing of the Holy Spirit they bring the good news to the poor and proclaim a year of favour for all those they pray for. (Luke 4:18)

ANGELUS PRAYER

V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary,
R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee; blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen

V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
R. Be it done unto me according to Your Word.

V. And the Word was made flesh,
R. And dwelt among us.

Pour forth, we beseech You, O Lord, Your Grace into our hearts; that as we to whom the incarnation of Christ, Your Son was made known by the message of an Angel, may by his passion and cross, be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Millets famous painting called the Angelus depicts a man and a woman taking time off from their work in the field to pray the Angelus prayer as the bells ring out. Humbly they acknowledge the greatest event that has ever happened in the life of mankind. God’s word has become flesh and through Him we shall receive everlasting life.
